Punjab's Joyful Harvest — Celebrate in Vibrant Color

About Baisakhi

Baisakhi (also spelled Vaisakhi) is one of the most important festivals in the Punjabi calendar, celebrated every year on April 13 or 14. It marks the harvest of the Rabi (spring) crop and the beginning of the Punjabi New Year. For Sikhs, it also holds deep religious significance as the day in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa — the community of initiated Sikhs. Baisakhi is a festival of joy, music, bhangra dance, and vibrant traditional dress.

How Baisakhi Is Celebrated

Baisakhi celebrations include visits to the Gurudwara for prayers and langar (community meal), followed by community fairs, bhangra and giddha performances, and festive gatherings. The energy is high, the colors are bright, and traditional Punjabi dress is worn with great pride. Austin's Punjabi and Sikh communities celebrate Baisakhi with community events and cultural programs every April.

What to Wear for Baisakhi

Punjabi Salwar Kameez
The classic Baisakhi outfit for women — a bright salwar kameez in cotton or silk with a phulkari (floral embroidery) dupatta. Comfortable, colorful, and deeply Punjabi in character.
Patiala Suit
Loose, pleated Patiala salwar with a short kurta — the most iconic Punjabi women's silhouette. Especially beautiful for Bhangra and Giddha performances where movement matters.
Phulkari Dupatta
No Punjabi outfit is complete without a phulkari (flower work) dupatta — hand-embroidered in vibrant silk threads on cotton fabric. A treasured Punjabi textile tradition.
Men — Kurta & Tehmat
Traditional Punjabi men's attire includes a long kurta with a tehmat (dhoti-style wrap) or churidar, often in white or bright colors, with a turban for Sikh men and a phulkari stole.
