About Pongal
Pongal is one of the most important Tamil festivals, celebrated over four days in mid-January to mark the end of the winter solstice and the start of the sun's northward journey (Uttarayan). It is a thanksgiving festival — expressing gratitude to the sun, nature, and farm animals for a bountiful harvest. Pongal is primarily celebrated by Tamil Hindus and is especially significant in Tamil Nadu, though Tamil communities across Texas celebrate it with great joy.
The Four Days of Pongal
Bhogi Pongal (Day 1) involves discarding old items and welcoming the new. Surya Pongal (Day 2) is the main day — the sweet Pongal rice dish is cooked outdoors and offered to the Sun god. Mattu Pongal (Day 3) honors cattle with garlands, paint, and festivities. Kaanum Pongal (Day 4) is for family visits and outings. Traditional silk sarees are worn especially on Surya Pongal and Mattu Pongal days.
